Nothing focuses ones attention on understanding a health issue as much as being afflicted with RA as I was in the mid 1970’s. Working my way back to health along a pathway of discovery I focused my professional career on helping patients with R.A. and other chronic diseases to restore their health. This included teaching students and doctors about Rheumatoid Disorders in the classroom for over four decades and working with patients suffering with Rheumatoid Diseases for the same period. Today, the Goldberg Tener Clinic continues to assist patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, not by suppressing symptoms but by identifying the causes of illness in each case, addressing those causes and restoring their health. In 1977, I wrote my Masters Thesis on Rheumatoid Disorders prior to graduating from the University of Texas Medical Center School of Public Health. At that time, as with now, RA was medically viewed as a chronic condition that inevitably worsened over time. Rheumatologists suppressed symptoms with steroids (read “Problems with Prednisone”) and other anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals with their long lists of side effects. Family Physicians shuffled these patients off to Rheumatologists. Rheumatoid Disease Patients we have assisted over the decades generally regret their experience in medical offices.

What has changed since the 1970’s is that increasingly toxic drugs are being employed with more dangerous side effects. Added to the list of steroids and other immunosuppressant’s are the “Biologicals” including TNF Alpha inhibitors, which literally turn off a vital portion of the patient’s immune system leaving the patient open to lymphoma (cancer) and serious infections. Remicaide, Humira, and Enbrel comprise a few of this list of “monoclonal antibody” based preparations drug companies promote over the media with fervor. Go to a Rheumatologist anywhere in the U.S. with RA and you are almost certain to be placed on one as soon as your insurance company agrees to foot the astronomical bill.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and other Rheumatoid Diseases cause immense suffering. Ongoing pain, disability, fatigue, loss of work and social life are all problems patients endure. Add to this the numerous side effects resulting from the pharmaceuticals they ingest, are injected and infused with. Rheumatoid Diseases are not just problems with the joints and musculature, they are systemic diseases affecting the entire body producing systemic complaints such as Chronic Fatigue, Depression, Gastrointestinal Disorders etc.

In addition to taking medically prescribed drugs, many of our patients have taken treatments from “Alternative” and “Functional Medical Physicians” with equally disappointing results (read “The Facade of Functional and Alternative Medicine”). Here again etiological factors are largely ignored and the emphasis remains on pills and potions none of which address why the patient became ill initially.

All aspects of the patient must be considered starting with a lengthy interview to understand how the patient’s Rheumatoid Disease began, a physical examination and standard and functional laboratory studies. Each patient is different from the next and requires an individualized program. Particular attention is given to the immune, endocrine and gastrointestinal systems, the patient’s nutritional biochemistry, toxicology, biomechanics and life stressors that may have played a role in the genesis of the patient’s disease.

The tragic outcomes that often occur medically can often be avoided if the right steps are taken in a timely manner. The longer one waits and the more pharmaceuticals employed the more challenging the potential recovery will be.

Rheumatoid Arthritis need not lead to misery, drug dependency and a lifetime of ongoing medical care.
