Reversing the “Irreversible”: Nora’s Rheumatoid Arthritis Success Story

Dr. David Tener Clinic Director

Nora first came to the Goldberg Tener Clinic in 2019 after struggling with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) for 13 years. She had been diagnosed by a medical rheumatologist in 2006 and, over the years, had been prescribed numerous medications in an effort to control her Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms. These included NSAIDs, Prednisone, Hydroxychloroquine, Methotrexate, Arava, Humira, Cimzia and Rituxan.

Despite years of treatment, Nora continued to struggle with joint pain, inflammation, fatigue and declining health.

She later consulted an integrative medical physician and was given numerous nutritional supplements in addition to her medications. This approach also failed to produce the improvement in health she was seeking.

After 13 years, Nora wanted something different. Rather than continuing to focus on suppressing the symptoms and inflammatory response associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis, she wanted to understand why she had become chronically ill in the first place and what could be done to improve her overall health.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Looking Beyond Joint Inflammation

Rheumatoid Arthritis is as an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the joints, producing inflammation, pain, stiffness and, in some cases, progressive joint damage.

This description, however, leaves an important question unanswered:

Why did the patient become unhealthy and develop an abnormal inflammatory and immune response in the first place?

Patients diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis may receive the same diagnostic label, yet they are not necessarily sick for the same reasons.

Dietary habits, gastrointestinal function, sleep, chronic stress, previous illnesses, medication history, environmental exposures, endocrine function, physical condition and other individual factors may differ considerably from one patient to another.

For this reason, at the Goldberg Tener Clinic, we do not view the diagnosis itself as an adequate explanation for the patient’s poor health. Our objective is to evaluate the individual patient, identify factors contributing to poor health and work systematically to address those factors.

Why Suppressing Inflammation Is Not the Same as Restoring Health

Inflammation is one of the hallmark features of Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is why many conventional treatments are directed toward suppressing the inflammatory or immune response. Reducing inflammation can provide symptomatic relief, but suppressing inflammation and restoring health are not the same thing.

Prednisone, NSAIDs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologic medications can influence symptoms and inflammatory pathways, but they do not address the reasons the inflammation is occurring in the first place.

This distinction is central to our approach.

Instead of asking:

“How can we suppress the inflammation?”

We ask:

“Why is this patient chronically inflamed in the first place?”

Identifying and addressing the factors contributing to a patient’s poor health can provide a very different direction from simply attempting to control symptoms indefinitely.

Nora's Evaluation

When Nora came to the Goldberg Tener Clinic, we performed an extensive evaluation of her history, previous medical care, lifestyle, nutritional habits and overall health status, along with laboratory and other testing appropriate to her individual case.

The objective was to identify the individual factors contributing to her poor health and determine what changes could be made to improve her health, vitality and function.

Based upon our findings, we developed an individualized program utilizing the Bio-Hygienic Re-Creation System™, the approach developed at the Goldberg Tener Clinic over decades of working with patients suffering from chronic disease. Nora then did the most important part. She consistently put the recommendations into practice.

One Year Later: A Very Different Nora

Approximately one year after beginning care at the Goldberg Tener Clinic, Nora’s health and function had changed dramatically.

She reported:

  • Resolution of her joint pain

  • Significantly improved energy

  • Improved physical function and mobility

  • The ability to actively manage and operate her 500-acre farm in Maryland

  • Normal C-Reactive Protein (CRP)

  • Normal Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR)

She was also able to move beyond the pattern of continually relying upon medications to manage her Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms. After 13 years of struggling with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Nora had regained a level of health and function that at one time seemed unattainable.

Can Rheumatoid Arthritis Be Reversed?

We have worked with numerous patients diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and other autoimmune disorders over the past 50 years. Their histories repeatedly demonstrate that people carrying the same diagnostic label can have very different backgrounds, contributing factors and needs. This is why we do not employ a standardized “Rheumatoid Arthritis protocol.” Care must be individualized to the patient and their specific needs.

Our approach is based upon three fundamental objectives:

Identify Causes. Address Causes. Build Health.

As health and function improve, symptoms and abnormal laboratory findings can improve as well. Nora's case demonstrates what can is possible when attention shifts from from the diagnostic title alone to the health of the individual carrying that label.

A Different Approach to Rheumatoid Arthritis and Chronic Disease

At the Goldberg Tener Clinic, we do not treat disease. We build health.

Our work with patients diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and other chronic diseases focuses on identifying the factors responsible for poor health and helping the patient establish the conditions necessary for improved health and function.

The Goldberg Tener Clinic has worked with patients from across the United States and internationally for decades.
