From Hopeless to Healthy: How Addressing Underlying Causes Helped Reverse Years of Chronic Health Problems

When Sabra first came to the Goldberg Tener Clinic, she was frustrated, discouraged, and had lost hope that she could regain her health. At 65 years of age, she spent years going from doctor to doctor searching for answers. Instead of improving, her list of health problems continued to grow.

She suffered from:

Like many people with multiple chronic health complaints, she accumulated a long list of medications.

She was taking medication for high blood pressure, a statin drug to lower cholesterol, and Zyrtec daily for allergies. She had relied on Tums and famotidine regularly to control reflux and had even consulted a dermatologist who prescribed a medication carrying a black box warning because of an increased risk of cancer.

Despite these treatments, her health continued to decline.

Looking Beyond Individual Symptoms

Most healthcare approaches attempt to manage each symptom separately.

  • One medication for blood pressure.

  • Another for cholesterol.

  • Another for allergies.

  • Another for reflux.

  • Another for skin problems.

  • Another for headaches.

  • etc.

The body’s systems are interconnected. When one underlying problem disrupts multiple physiological systems, the result is often a growing list of seemingly unrelated diagnoses.

Our goal was not to treat Sabra’s allergies, skin condition, blood pressure, or digestive issues individually. Our objective was to identify the underlying factors interfering with normal physiology and create the conditions that would allow her body to restore healthier function.

Identifying the Common Threads

After completing a comprehensive evaluation, it became apparent that many of Sabra’s health problems were interrelated.

Three primary factors appeared to be driving much of what she was experiencing:

  1. Poor blood sugar regulation: Years of impaired blood sugar control can contribute to chronic allergies, skin eruptions, weight gain, fatigue, elevated blood pressure, skin problems, accelerated aging and numerous other chronic health issues. Learn more.

  2. Digestive dysfunction: Long-standing digestive disturbances can influence inflammation throughout the body and contribute to allergies, skin disorders, blood sugar disruption and multiple other chronic health issues. Learn more.

  3. Low vitality: The body requires adequate energy reserves to continually repair tissues, regulate metabolism, detoxify wastes, maintain normal immune function, and adapt to daily stress. When vitality becomes depleted over many years, multiple body systems struggle simultaneously.

Rather than viewing her symptoms as unrelated conditions requiring separate treatments, we viewed them as different expressions of the same underlying physiological imbalances.

Building Health Instead of Chasing Symptoms

Our recommendations focused on restoring normal physiological function through individualized nutritional, lifestyle, and hygienic measures. These included specific steps, individualized to Sabra's needs, intended to improve digestive function, balance blood sugar, reduce unnecessary physiological stress, support restorative sleep, improve dietary quality, and helping her body gradually rebuild its health.

The Results

Before-and-after comparison of a 65-year-old woman with chronic allergies, fatigue and skin issues showing reduced facial puffiness, under-eye swelling and healthier skin.

As Sabra consistently followed her program, positive changes began to occur.

Her appearance changed dramatically. The chronic puffiness beneath her eyes diminished.

Her skin became healthier. Her eyes looked clearer. Her energy improved. Her digestion strengthened. Her blood pressure normalized. She is now drug free! Many of the symptoms that had burdened Sabra for years became significantly better as her overall health improved. Most importantly, she no longer felt hopeless. She understood that her body had not been “failing” her. It had simply been expressing the consequences of long-standing physiological imbalance.
